July’s email marketing tips: the best content from around the web

04 Aug 2010

Here at the Pure360 towers, we frequently get asked for our advice on all things email marketing, which is why each month I can be found prowling the web for the most interesting bits and pieces. First up in my email marketing review for July is a post from Jay Chambers of Jaymail.net, with a screenshot purporting to be a leak of the new design for Google’s Gmail:

Untitled

Jay reports that “notable changes [to the next version of Gmail] include:

•    More emphasis on placing ‘Mail’, ‘Contacts’ and ‘Tasks’ top left
•    ‘Compose Mail’ has been changed from a text link to a button, and moves below ‘Mail’, ‘Contacts’ and ‘Tasks’
•    No links to actions such as “Select All” or “Select None”
•    Drop down box next to the email address along top bar (Gmail account switcher?)
•    In the chat box, note the ‘call phone’ button – Google Voice intergration?”

All of which sounds thoroughly exciting. Gmail is already an excellent product and any further improvements - particularly something as exciting as Google Voice integration for the UK - would be icing on an already tasty cake.

Elsewhere, there’s a rather in-depth but interesting presentation on the subject of ‘Email Marketing Strategies and Tips For Small and Local Businesses’ on Slideshare by Kutenda:

This is a subject we covered in a recent post, but the Kutenda presentation covers more of the basics of email marketing and gives a bit more of a generalised overview of the subject. Definitely worth a browse if this is an area that interests you.

While this shouldn’t strictly be in the email marketing review for this month, I felt this PDF from Tamara Gielen was more than worthy of inclusion:
Email-design-checklist

Tamara’s checklist covers all the basics of designing a good email for marketing, including envelope (i.e. from address, subject lines), headers, bodycopy, footers and more. While some of the more experienced email marketing bods amongst us will have all of this committed to memory already, it’s still an essential guide to those just starting out or wanting to double-check everything before a mailout.

Plus, you also get the opportunity to sign up to Tamara’s excellent monthly email newsletter before downloading, too.

If you’ve found anything that you think would be a worth addition to these monthly round-ups, please drop me a line in either the comment box below or fire off an email.
